Knee Replacements: Signs That Its Time

by Sasha Meyer

If you have been plagued with a bad knee for the last few years, you may wonder if it is time to get knee replacement surgery. While it is an invasive surgery, it can greatly improve your overall quality of life. For some people, a knee replacement may be down the road several years, while for others it may be time to get it done. Here are a few key indicators that its time to schedule your knee replacement.

Constant Pain

There is a difference between having recurrent pain and having constant pain. For example, someone who feels pain at least once each day may have recurrent pain, but it might not necessarily be constant. Other people will feel pain throughout the entire day, whether they are on their feet or not. Constant pain is a sign that it is time to get treatment sooner rather than later.

Challenges With Daily Tasks

If you are having a hard time doing the small tasks that you need to accomplish each day, it might be time to get the surgery done. Some people have such constant and severe knee pain that they are unable to get themselves showered or dressed. If you are losing your independence due to your knee pain, talk to your doctor immediately. Your knee pain may also limit your ability to enjoy hobbies or get around outside. While you may not be able to move like you could when you were 20, you should be able to enjoy your life still.

Other Treatments Aren't Helpful

If you have tried other treatments and they have not proven helpful, it may be time to talk to your doctor. For example, if pain medications used to cover your pain enough so that you could function and they are no longer working, the problem may be something only surgery can fix. Some people use knee braces or canes for support, and if you are still experiencing pain and an inability to move with these tools, its time to get surgery.

In conclusion, you do not need to continue living in pain. While no one enjoys getting surgery, it may be just what you need to get your life back. Instead of letting your pain dictate what you are able to do each day, take your life back into your own hands with a knee replacement. Talk to your doctor about getting your knee surgery scheduled. It is never too late to start living your life again.
