Do You Need A New Hearing Aid?

by Sasha Meyer

Your hearing aid is an essential part of your daily life. You use your hearing aid to capture conversations and to hear the world around you more clearly. Without your hearing aid, you feel out of touch with what is going on around you, so it's essential your hearing aid is always working as it should.

Like all medical devices, eventually your hearing aid won't work the way it's supposed to or will become uncomfortable. Or, your hearing aid will function properly but be dated and you may wonder what newer models and technological advancements in hearing aids are available. Do you need a new hearing aid? Use this guide to assist you and speak with an audiologist or hearing aid specialist about your options.

You are embarrassed of your hearing aid

Most hearing aids on the market today are designed to be discreet in their appearance and use so you can hardly know you're wearing one. Furthermore, hearing aids are often designed to be very small so they are barely noticeable unless someone knows you are wearing one.

If you are wearing a bulky over-the-ear or inner ear hearing device, you may be ready for an upgrade. Several models designed to fit behind the ear, over the ear, and even inside the ear are transparent and largely discreet so you can wear them comfortably without embarrassment.

You don't hear as well as you used to

Your hearing aid should not whine or produce an echo. If it does, then your hearing may have changed or the device may not be operating at a function where you can reach the decibels needed to hear clearly.

You should see your audiologist for a hearing test. You should also have your hearing aid specialist inspect your current hearing device to see if the unit is working properly. If your hearing has changed or your device isn't working right, you may be able to upgrade to a better, newer hearing aid that better fits your needs.

You don't feel comfortable with your hearing aid

If your hearing aid is too tight or too loose or otherwise gives you discomfort, you may be tempted to stop wearing the unit entirely. This isn't good and is a sign you need to have your device adjusted or switched out to a better-fitting hearing aid. Rather than go with compromised hearing, have yourself fitted for a new hearing aid that fits and feels better.
